68年文化大革命复课闹革命后，军宣队、工宣队先后进驻学校。以后，清理教师队伍、清查“516分子”等等一系列政治运动不断，每天除了上课外，下午3、4点钟开始政治学习，直到晚上7、8点，有时还要拖到10点钟才能回家。生活单调而乏味，政治气氛却紧张而沉闷，不是今天整这个，就是明天批那个，要么就是莫名其妙、含沙射影地乱批一通，叫你人人自危，谨小慎微，循规蹈矩，不敢“越雷池一步”。

那个年代，精神文化生活是一片空白。古今中外的名著，不论是文学的、历史的、抑或哲学的，等等，不是禁书，就是大毒草。排在禁书之列的，就算是被打入了冷宫，市面上是见不到的，图书馆有也不能借；能列为“毒草”的书，倒有些“福”了，原本可能是一本不起眼的书，没人要看，成了反面教材，却引起了大家一睹为快的心理，无形中作了些义务的宣传。再者，偷看禁书，犯禁，是要受批评的；反之，以“毒草”为反面教材，阅读起来是冠冕堂皇的，不必要遮遮掩掩。当然，最主要的著作还是人手一册的毛主[xi]语录。

业余时间，除了有时翻翻学校订阅的英文版北京周报外，也看看当时被视为亚得里亚海滨的一盏社会主义明灯的阿尔巴尼亚的英文杂志。70年9月，一次偶然的机会，看到了一页“新阿尔巴尼亚”画报举办征文比赛的副页，由该画报编辑部向全世界的读者提出一组16个问题（中文版的是15个问题，不知何故？），要求参赛者书面回答，作为比赛。问题的答案，大体在1969和1970出版的画报中可以找到；并且设有四个奖项：其中，一等奖一名，阿尔巴尼亚访问15天，费用编辑部承担；二等奖二名，阿尔巴尼亚访问15天，但旅费自理；三等奖二名，一床阿尔巴尼亚地毯和其他工艺品；四等奖五名，免费赠送“新阿尔巴尼亚”画报一年。作为英语习作的练习，我先找了一下有关的资料，看看大致不差，也就做“文抄公”，参加了一次抄文比赛。洋洋数千字，而且居然也得了个二等奖；但仅仅榜上有名，并无下文。

说实话，我从未把此等游戏当回事，但总不应是件坏事！已是三十多年前的事了，想想都觉得很可笑（当然是一种苦涩的笑）；要是现在，则简直是不可思议的事了。现在不会再发生的事，过去曾有过！做个纪念，特将二份信函附上，也算是一个过去日子的脚印吧！

i　am　a　chinese　reader　to　the　“new　albania”　magazine.　while　writing　to　you,　i　seem　to　chat　with　some　bosom　friends　from　afar.　i　am　overwhelmed　by　the　pure　feelings　and　love　cherished　by　chinese　people　for　the　valiant　albanian　people.

people　during　the　past　twenty-six　years,　i　am　brimming　with　joy　and　pride　of　an　intimate　friend.　but　i　am　sure　that　the　prospects　forecasted　by　the　five-years　plan　will　be　still　brighter.　your　great　leader　comrade　enver　hoxha　says　well：“　the　prospects　are　clear,　the　future　of　our　people　and　of　our　homeland　is　bright.　today　we　are　already　seeing　the　contours　of　our　happier　future　taking　shape　in　vivid　colours.”　

i　love　albania　and　its　people.　i　love　the　party　of　labour　of　albania　and　its　great　leader　comrade　enver　hoxha.　the　fraternal　and　militant　friendship　between　our　people　forged　by　our　two　heroic　parties　and　by　our　two　great　leaders,　comrade　mao　tse-dong　and　comrade　enver　hoxha,　is　unbreakable　and　everlasting.

finally,　let　me　with　a　few　words　conclude　the　letter:　i　don’t　care　in　the　least　whether　i　can　win　the　championship　of　the　competition,　but　still　i　can’t　help　writing　and　collecting　the　references　and　materials　about　albania　……

it　goes　without　saying　it　is　a　great　honour　to　have　one’s　name　listed　among　the　winners　of　the　competition.

this　morning,　when　i　had　a　glimpse　over　the　chinese　edition　of　the　magazine　“new　albania”,　to　my　great　surprise,　i　was　listed　among　the　winners　of　the　second　prize.　from　the　bottom　of　my　heart,　i　know　i　had　nothing　to　recommend　myself,　yet　i　feel　flattered　and　happy,　and　take　it　as　telling　expression　of　the　crystallization　of　friendship　between　our　great　peoples　of　the　two　countries.　now　please　allow　me　avail　myself　this　opportunity　to　express　my　thanks　to　the　people　of　albania　for　the　honour　granted　me.
